Caribbean Medical University is a private university located in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles and delivers medical degree program that concentrates on basic medical sciences, taught in Curacao.

Overview

CMU enrolls classes three times a year: January, May, and September. Students complete their Basic Science education on the island in four semesters and upon successful completion, students move to 5 semesters of Clinical Rotaitons in the United States. After completing the 4th semester, students study for and sit for the USMLE Step 1 exam, and then continue on in clinical clerkships at teaching hospitals throughout the United States. Upon completion of the curriculum, similar to that of US medical schools, students must pass the USMLE Step 2 CS and USMLE Step 2 CK, prior to graduation. CMU is recognized by the Government of Curacao and the Government of Netherlands Antilles to confer Doctor of Medicine degrees.

Medical Curriculum

The aim of the curriculum of the medical school is to produce leaders in medicine, who will take the foundation of a broad education in medicine, to improve health through patient care, research, and education. Medical education at the Caribbean Medical University is delivered over four calendar years. This includes 4 semesters (16 months) of Basic Science at the Curacao campus, followed by USMLE Review Course and 5 semesters (20 months) of Clinical Science at affiliated hospitals in the United States.

Basic Science

The curriculum is divided into four semesters of four months each, and students may complete up to three semesters of work in a calendar year. Therefore, the Basic Science education can be completed in a minimum of 16 months.

After completing Basic Science, students enter into the 5th semester (USMLE Review Course) and upon completion are required to take the USMLE Step 1. Upon successfully passing the exam, students proceed to the Clinical Science Program.

Clinical Science Program

The Clinical Science at CMU consist of 72 weeks of clinical training at affiliated hospitals in the United States. This includes 42 weeks of core clerkships and 30 weeks of elective clerkships. Family Practice and Neurology are required electives.

Accreditation

On November 9th 2007 CMU received a charter and recognition of its degree granting rights by the Government of the Netherlands Antilles and the Government of Curacao. [ [http://www.cmumed.org/about/charter.htm CMU Charter] ]

CMU is not accredited by any medical school accreditation association.

Licensing

Qualifications granted by CMU are not accepted for licensing of physicians in some jurisdictions, and use of such qualifications and titles they confer may be restricted by law.
