Ashok Mitra

Ashok Mitra

Ashok Mitra is a former Finance Minister of West Bengal state in India and a former Member of Rajya Sabha . He was minister in communist government led by Jyoti Basu but resigned from the ministership during the late 1980s following a difference of opinion with the Jyoti Basu and the party leadership. He was Chairman, Parliament's Standing Committee on Industry and Commerce. He has authored Calcutta Diary in Economic and Political Weekly and Terms of Trade and Class Relations. He was earlier Chairman of Agricultural Prices Commission and Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India. He is also the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award for his contributions to Bengali literature.
