began in June 2007 [Maritime Journal (July 2007) | [http://www.maritimejournal.com/archive/2007/july/news/construction_start_at_great_yarmouth] ] , the harbour which is being built in the South Denes area plans to bring trade to the area and will include a container terminal.
Planning and Construction
The Contract for the Harbour Construction was awarded jointly to Van Oord UK Ltd and Edmund Nuttall Ltd. The Contract is worth in the region of £75m. The new Harbour consists of construction of two breakwaters with a total length of approximately 1,400m, requiring the importation of approximately 900,000 tons of rock materials. There will be the dredging and subsequent beneficial reuse of approximately 1,600,000m3 of sand to provide 17.6ha of land for future port development. The joint venture will construct approximately 450m of quay wall with associated capping beam and crane rail as well as 225m of revetment berth and associated berthing dolphins. Work commenced on site in June 2007, and whilst completion is expected within two years, a fully operational container berth will he available after 18 months. Great Yarmouth Port Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of International Port Holdings (IPH) which was formed in 2006 with a strategy to invest in small to medium sized ports having the potential to expand in scope and scale, and to contribute to regeneration initiatives and economic development.The landmark scheme, which has received £8.75m in funding from the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), is will see Great Yarmouth become it a key port for lorry freight traffic between continental Europe and the British Midlands.An agreement between Great Yarmouth Port Authority and IPH will see Great Yarmouth Port Company develop the Outer Harbour and take over the operation of the port.
