- Vostu
Vostu is a social networking company which was launched in May 2007.
Initially the membership was restricted to students of high schools and universities in Latin America, and then in August 2007 it transformed itself into a fully integrated social networking platform for Latin Americans by introducing the concept of a "Social Sphere" where users can select to join an existing sphere within Vostu or create one themselves using the latest technology to personalize and localize their sphere. Vostu's Social Spheres are meant to fully encapsulate the online and offline connections of its users by homing in on verticalized, local content while maintaining a global structure. Some of the most popular spheres are nightlife in Buenos Aires, Fotobloggers in Chile (Chileflog.com), fans of Shakira, Scolas de Sambas do Rio, and the University of Buenos Aires as well as the Iberoamerican University (Mexico City) networks.
The name "Vostu" tries to capture the variations in Spanish-spoken across the region (Argentina vs Mexico) and because "vos" is more formal than "tu", the idea is that this community allows people to become closer to the people around them.
Vostu was started by Daniel Kafie, Mario Schlosser and Josh Kushner while they were students at Harvard University. As of September 2007, Vostu is a private company with offices in Miami and Buenos Aires. The company is venture-backed by Intel Capital who led a $1.3m seed round in early 2008.
