Sarah Wrench

Sarah Wrench

Sarah Wrench was born in 1833 and died fifteen years later on May 6, 1848, in East Mersea, Essex, UK. Little else is known about her, except for the bizarre circumstances of her burial at St. Edmund's Church: along with a placard bearing her name and date of death, a large iron cage was placed over her grave by her fellow villagers.

She was buried in unhallowed ground, an area of the church graveyard normally set aside for suicides and criminals; this has led to the popular belief that she was a witch, and that the cage was designed to keep her from escaping her grave after death. [Jones, Richard. "Myths of Britain and Ireland". New Holland Publishers: London, UK, 2003.]

As of 2005, the cage appears to have been removed and can no longer be visited. [ [http://www.paranormaldatabase.com/gallery/essex007.htm Cage of Sarah Wrench] , Essex Gallery, [http://www.paranormaldatabase.com Paranormal Database] ]
