- The Technium
The Technium is a conceptual theory of technology conceived by Kevin Kelly in a lecture in July 2007.
Kelly asserts that specific technologies are like individuals, or species, and the society or ecosystem of these individuals is the technium.
Kelly describes the Technium as a system that emerges from the interactions of different pieces of technology. The Technium replaces the concept of Technology (with a capital T) and builds on the concept of Technology. Kelly believes that the Technium, like any complex system, has needs, urges and desires. In this respect the Technium is similar to the natural, global, biological
ecosystem .The Technium, as an ecology of technologies, forms an entity larger and more complex than any single technology. As well as cultural effects, the Technium also behaves independently of human beings.
