Henry Capell, 1st Baron Capell of Tewkesbury KB, PC (
6 March 1638 –30 May 1696 ) was a seventeenth century English peer.Born in
Hadham Parva ,Hertfordshire , he was the son of the 1st Baron Capell of Hadham and Elizabeth Morrison, and brother of the 1st Earl of Essex.Invested as a
Knight of theOrder of the Bath on23 April 1661 , he was a member of the IrishPrivy Council from April 1673 to March 1684 or 1685. Capell was alsoFirst Lord of the Admiralty between February 1679 to February 1681, andLord of the Treasury andMember of Parliament for Cockermouth between 1689 and 1690. A member of the English Privy Council from22 April 1679 to31 January 1679 or 1980, he was invested again on14 February 1688 or 1689. On11 April 1692 , he was enobled as Baron Capell of Tewkesbury, in the County ofGloucester . One year later he became Lord Justice of Ireland and in turn aPrivy Councillor of Ireland in June 1693. In 1695 and 1696, Capell was finallyLord Deputy of Ireland . He died, aged 58 inChapelizod ,County Dublin and was buried on8 September 1696 inHadham , Hertfordshire.On
16 February 1658 or 1659, he married Dorothy Bennet, daughter of Richard Bennet. Their marriage was childless and so his title became extinct with Capell's deaths.References
