Hwa Chong International School (zh-cp|c=华中国际学校|p=Huá Zhōng Guójì Xuéxiào), an international school based in Singapore, is an affiliated school of Hwa Chong Institution catering to foreign students.

Overview

HCIS offers a six-year programme, Grade 7 (11-13 years old) to Grade 12, finishing with the GCE 'A' Levels. In the interim years, the students will sit for the IGCSE. Their results in these examinations will enable them to gain admission into local and overseas universities.

The Present Principal of Hwa Chong International is Mr Yeong Seow Chang, whereas Mr Chung Wen Chee, former vice-principal of The Chinese High School, the predecessor of Hwa Chong Institution has returned to his former school. The current Deputy Principal is Mrs Mok Shuieh Ling. The first and current Chief Executive Officer is Mr Tooh Fee San. Mr Tooh was the former principal of The Chinese High School from 1978 to 1999. The CEO, the Principal and three other senior staff members (Mdm Ong Lay Peng, Mdm Wang Wanyi and Mr Gan Tiong Beng), together with Administrator Ms Ong Li Whee, were the pioneers of the school. However, all the pioneer teachers have now returned to their former school, Hwa Chong Institution and new teachers have taken the role to enlarge the students' minds.

A fully private independent school, HCIS is an extension of the Hwa Chong cluster of schools and colleges, an education powerhouse renowned for producing President’s Scholars in Singapore.

Since being founded in 2005, HCIS has achieved commendable results. HCIS students have been awarded Gold and Silver awards at the Scholastic Environment Fund Oratorical contest, and were ranked 26^th out of 102 schools in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad. The HCIS students of more than 12 different nationalities contributed wholeheartedly to Singapore on the Nation's birthday this year. The students, by their own accord, raised more than $3000 for the Convalescent Home (Singapore Children's Society) by organising a Food Carnival at the home that is situated in one of the most remote areas in Singapore.

Curriculum

Hwa Chong International School has a curriculum-infused boarding experience, and a residential experience that fully supports and complements the main curriculum. This concept serves as a primary vehicle for some of the school's character-building programmes. Students will enjoy living, learning and playing as a vibrant community within the Hwa Chong Institution Boarding School, located only a stone's throw from HCIS. Designed by renowned Kenzo Tange, the state-of-the-art complex consists of seven 6-storey blocks providing accommodation for up to 1000 boarders.

The ingenuity of the curriculum lies in a seamless pursuit that opens a pool of learning opportunities, whose desired outcome is to equip students with nothing less than knowledge and skills applicable to the needs of a fast evolving world. It will imbue students with the passion and fervour to pursue learning into their adult years, preparing them for a commitment to a cycle of life-long learning.

Learning-oriented framework

The academic curriculum, over a period of 6 years, will offer students the major academic domains that constitute the basic requirement for the GCE 'A' Level. These will include English Language, Mother Tongue Language, Mathematics and Sciences. A parallel modular system will offer a wide range of elective subjects aimed at encouraging an integrated and dynamic approach to the appreciation, enjoyment, and application of knowledge.

While the through train of 6 years is in place, the school recognises the need of some of its students to gain places in Colleges even beforehand. Thus students may sit for the IGCSE whilst in their Grade 10.

An interesting feature of the academic curriculum is the special emphasis on decision-making and career-management skills. These skills, together with communication, oral presentation and information-technology, will be infused generally across all the various disciplines and subject domains.

Customised learning

Parents and students will work hand in hand with the faculty team to map out a personalised education plan. A learning partnership will be forged between the student, his parents and teachers to monitor and manage the learning outcomes, where intellectual self-determination and shared accountability will be emphasised.

Students can customise and configure their courses according to their interests and goals. There will be free migration of vocational and academic modules. Close collaboration with local and overseas polytechnics and universities to offer twinning and advancement placement programmes will also be organised. Added to that, they may take a third language if they are found to be able to cope.

Added to that, the wireless IT-enabled environment in the new campus and the boarding facility will support self-directed, interactive and collaborative learning via electronic, digital and virtual platforms.

Campus

A new campus has been built for the new school. The new campus sits between the canteen of the high school section of Hwa Chong Institution and the Hwa Chong Institution Boarding School, and contains two blocks. One of the blocks has 36 classrooms, while the other features the HCIS Administration Office and Staff Rooms, six science laboratories, one multi-purpose hall, one lecture theatre, the gallery, one computer room, one media resource centre, a street soccer court and an ecogarden. The new campus will also provide students with wireless internet in key locations such as the planned student activity centre and the library. Classrooms are also air-conditioned, as per normal with international school standards.
