footnotes =Imtiaz Gilani is the current (2004 - 2008) Vice Chancellor of the University of Engineering and Technology,
Peshawar ,Pakistan . Mr. Gilani being the Vice Chancellor of NWFP UET peshawar has modified the old system in the university to a modern, more dynamic and practical system.He was born on the 27th of December, 1947, in the small town Kohat to a Syed family who are direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad. His early years were spent studying in St. Joseph's Convent School, Kohat and from 1959 to 1964 in Cadet College, Hasanabdal. He completed his B.Engineering (Civil) from the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar (1964- 1968) after which he did his M. Engineering (Structures), 1969 - 1971 from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. He did his MBA in Finance (1978 - 1981) from the Rutgers Graduate School of Management, Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A and graduated top 5% of class (Member Beta Gamm Sigma, a fraternity of top U.S. Business School graduates).He worked with Barnett and Herenchak, Inc. Consulting Engineers, Broad Street, New Jersey, USA as a Design Engineer on a myriad of civil engineering projects and then as a Site Engineer from 1972 - 1973.
From 1973- 1981 he worked as Project Engineer at Sverdrup and Parcel, Inc., Consulting Engineers (New York, USA) where his principal area of concentration included designing and supervision of mass transit facilities such as subways, subway stations and mono-rail systems.
He served as the Minister for Education, Information, Tourism, Culture, Sports, Archives, Archaeology and Youth Affairs, Government of NWFP (Pakistan). He introduced many reforms to shift focus from "implementers" to the end-users, i.e. from Departments to children and schools. These included:
1. Strict enforcement of merit and transparency2. Restructured Department into Schools and Higher Education3. Separated teaching and management cadres4. Most powers devolved to districts5. Accountability of teachers introduced by institutionalizing reward and punishment. 6. New student-friendly text-books introduced7. English introduced as medium of instruction in two districts8. Computer programs started in schools with private sector. 9. Afternoon scholing started in existing schools as a public-private collaorative effort.10. All indicators showed such as enrollment, drop-outs, absenteeism etc. showed marked improvement. 11. Twenty colleges opened in unused buildings. 12. Three universities in the public and four in the private sector established.13. Two new Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education established. 14. Two new campuses of Engineering University established. 15. Regulatory authority to monitor and superivse private sector educational institutions established.
He is also the Managing Director of Ambar Prefab (Pvt) from 1981 to date, a multi-discipline engineering company engaged in:
(a) Manufacture of pre-cast roofing systems(b) Civil engineering project-planning and consultancy(c) Construction of buildings(d) Construction of roads and bridges
Imtiaz Gilani is also an avid sporsman, especially keen on tennis and shooting. He is deeply interested in the socio-economic affairs of Pakistan. His principal area of interest lies in the social sectors. He keenly follows international issues that bear directly on Pakistan. He is interested in low-cost housing technology. He has contributed numerous articles to newspapers on political, socio-economic and engineering related issues.
He is happily married and has four children.
Minister for InformationOn the 19th of November, 2007, Imtiaz Gilani was chosen as the Minister of Information for the interim setup until the elections which are to be held on the 7th of January, 2008. He took his vows along with 12 other new ministers. Some of his family members also attended.
