Indian Ocean Research Group

The Indian Ocean Research Group (IORG) is a social science policy-oriented research network, focusing on issues of common concern in the Indian Ocean region. These include India-Australia relations, peace and security, regionalism, geopolitical orientations of Indian Ocean states, energy security, small island states, human and economic development, sea lanes of communication, trade, ocean resources, the environment and environmental security. The IORG was incorporated in June 2007. Its Chairperson is Professor Dennis Rumley of Edith Cowan University, Australia.

Their website states that IORG was built on two pillars – one in India and one in Australia. Furthermore, the original IORG Charter envisaged other developments, including regional training and education, an annual Indian Ocean lecture, an Indian Ocean Policy Seminar and a broader publication programme. The IORG holds regular meetings around the Indian Ocean, at Chandigarh (2002), Tehran (2004), Kuala Lumpur (2006), and Muscat (2007), and meetings are planned for Australia (2008) and Réunion (2009). The group's journal, "Indian Ocean Survey", is published twice a year, and is edited by Professor P V Rao. Books edited by the IORG include:

*"Geopolitical Orientations, Regionalism and Security in the Indian Ocean", New Delhi, South Asian Publishers, 2004
*"Energy Security and the Indian Ocean Region", New Delhi, South Asian Publishers, 2005
*"The Security of Sea Lanes of Communication in the Indian Ocean, Kuala Lumpur, Maritime Institute of Malaysia, in press and to be launched later in 2007
*"Marine Biodiversity and Fisheries in the Indian Ocean Region, in preparation and built on selected papers given at the February 2007 Oman Conference
*"Crucible for Survival: Environmental Justice and Security in the Indian Ocean Region, New Jersey, Rutgers University Press, 2008.
