Kasilof River

Kasilof River

The Kasilof River is a river on the western Kenai Peninsula in southern Alaska at about coord|60|23|N|151|18|W|region:US. It begins at Tustumena Lake and flows northwest to Cook Inlet near Kasilof.

The name "Kasilof" is from a Russian surname. Kasilof was originally a Russian fur trading post. After the US purchased Alaska it became the site of the first salmon cannery in Alaska. In the 1920's fox farming became a profitable enterprise until the stockmarket crash of 1929. Today Kasilof is still heavily involved in commercial fishing and tourism. In fact one of the original homesites in Kasilof is still processing salmon under the brand name of Ed's Kasilof Seafoods.
