updated= August 25, 2007Teuflesberg (foaled February 3, 2004 in
Kentucky ) is an Americanthoroughbred stallion racehorse. He was sired by 2001 United States Champion 2-Yr-Old Colt Johannesburg, out of the Devils Bag mare, St. Michelle. He was a $9,000Fasig-Tipton October yearling sale.Trained by
Jamie Sanders , Teuflesberg was raced heavily as a two-year old, with 11 starts in 2006, coming in second toScat Daddy in theSanford Stakes before finally winning theSugar Bowl Stakes onChristmas Eve . Unfortunately, he had a habit of getting in trouble early in his races, especially coming out of the starting gate.Then in January, as a three year old, he placed third behind
Hard Spun in theLecomte Stakes . Moved toOaklawn Park in February, he wired theSouthwest Stakes , beatingHard Spun , who came in third. Unfortunately, he couldn't overcome a slow start in theRebel Stakes , and placed third toCurlin . A tough fourth by two noses and a head was all he got in theBlue Grass Stakes .Ridden by
Stewart Elliott , he placed a very disappointing 17th in theKentucky Derby and there was some doubt placed on his ability to go the distance so he was moved to shorter races.He won the seven
furlong Grade IIWoody Stephens Breeders' Cup Stakes and then placed second in the six furlong Grade IICarry Back Stakes and second in the eight furlongGlow Stakes , ridden byEdgar Prado , his first race on turf.Unfortunately, on August 25, he placed fourth behind the victorious
Hard Spun in the Grade IKing's Bishop Stakes atSaratoga Race Course withRobby Albarado aboard.During the running of the Grade III Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland on October 6, 2007, Teuflesberg suffered medial and lateral sesamoid fractures in his left front leg, effectively ending his racing career. He was taken to Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic in Lexington, where his fetlocks were fused in surgery. Tragically, his injury was not the only one suffered in this race, as in the paddock before the race even began, the three-year-old colt Dream of Angels flipped and landed on his head, suffering severe cranial and spinal injuries that neccessitated he be euthanized on site.
In December 2007, it was announced that a fully-recovered Teuflesberg would stand his initial stud season at Hurricane Hall in Lexington, KY, for a fee of $10,000.
