The Fraser-Hickson Library

The Fraser-Hickson Library

The Fraser-Hickson is Montreal's founding library, created in 1881 in the province of Quebec, Canada. Funded by a behest from successful merchant Hugh Fraser, who died in 1830, Fraser's will specified his wish to provide for and Institute that would create a "free public library, museum and gallery" during a time when access to books was limited. The library was also funded posthumously by Dr. J.W.A. Hickson.

By 2007, the library building was sold to a private school, a move some saw as avoidable. Montreal city officials reportedly offered funding to keep it as a library, but this was not pursued.
