His grandfather, Edward Bishop Sr., settled in Salem MA c
1639 .He was born in the area of
Salem, Massachusetts to Edward Bishop Jr. (the sawyer) and his first wife Hannah Raymond. He was baptized in Salem, Massachusetts,April 23 1648 . His father's second wife Bridget Playfer Wassalbe Oliver Bishop was arrested and became the first victim hanged during the trials.
In his Genealogical Dictionary, James Savage may have confused him and his father, this was not the only one of the old sources to be confused about the 3 or 4 Edward Bishops (3 of whom were father son and grandson) all of whom were living in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692.
Involvement in the Salem witchcraft trials
Edward Bishop and his wife Sarah were able to escape from prison [ Salem Witchcraft with an account of Salem Village and a history of opinions on Witchcraft and Kindred Subjects. Charles W. Upham, NY: Frederick Unger Pub Co, 1978, 2 VV, v 2 p 136. ] after which they went into hiding in Rehoboth. His property was confiscated. Later his son Samuel redeemed his property.
