- Bourj el-Barajneh
Bourj el-Barajneh ( _ar. برج البراجنة) is a neighborhood and suburb of
Beirut , inLebanon located between theBeirut International Airport and the town ofHaret Hreik , in the southern suburbs ofBeirut . The name also refers to aPalestinian refugee camp located on the edge of this neighborhood. TheLeague of Red Cross Societies established the camp in 1948 to accommodate an influx ofPalestinian refugees from theGalilee in present-day northern Israel. The camp was laidsiege to by theIsraeli army and localChristian Phalangists during1982 , afterIsrael invadedLebanon earlier that year. According to UNRWA more than 15,000 Palestinian refugees live in the camp, though originally only 10,000 were planned to live in the one square kilometer site. Another estimate puts that number at 20,000.The city was founded by
