WWF Hasbro Action Figures

WWF Hasbro Action Figures

The WWF Hasbro Action Figure line was an action figure toyline based on the wrestlers of the WWF. They were made by the toy company Hasbro from 1990 to 1994. The toys were made of plastic and each had a signature action move. Most of the moves were repeated in multiple figures. Critics of the line complain that the figures were too "cartoonish" especially coming off of the highly acclaimed Wrestling Superstars line from LJN, which sold the rights to Hasbro after their final run of figures in 1989.

These figures have become quite collectible, partly due to the popularity of pro wrestling in general, and the line being introduced at the peak of wrestling figures becoming "collectibles". While some have very high value still in their original package, the most common loose figures ranges from $1-$5. In poor condition most of the line isn't worth very much due to their great abundance. The figures that remain carded can command much higher prices though. In good condition a MOC (mint on card) figure can range from $20 or so for a Jake "The Snake" Roberts or Big Bossman to $200-$800 or more for a Dusty Rhodes to the unbelievable rare Kamala with a Moon on his belly. Other carded figures that can sell for hundreds are the 1992 Series on American Cards such as Brutus Beefcake #2 and Ultimate Warrior #3.

A large number of the collection has been released on foreign (usually French or Spanish) cards, and are of far less value than cards that are all in English writing, due to their abundance. For example, a 1992 Ultimate Warrior Mint on an American Card can fetch upwards of $150-$175 US, while the exact same figure on a French card may get around $15-$20 US.

Prototypes

*A Rhythm and Blues Tag Team set was planned but not produced. In a WWF Magazine in 1991, there were some prototype shots of a Greg Valentine and Honkytonk Man tag team set, featuring Valentine with black hair, white boots and a white jacket with musical notes on it (still having the Hammer Slammer move). The set was never officially produced, and there has never been any historic proof of this particular Greg Valentine figure existing outside of these prototype shots.
*Other planned but not produced figures in series 2 (1991) were Tugboat, Dino Bravo, Haku, The Barbarian (with a removable cloth cape), Nikolai Volkoff (when he became Face), Tito Santana (with long brown hair, white underwear and white boots but still having the Bulls Eye Bash move) and Boris Zhukov (when he became a singles wrestler). Tag Team sets planned but not produced in the same batch, as well as the Rhythm & Blues set, were a set of The Hart Foundation, of Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart, featuring Neidhart with a black vest, pink tights and white boots (still having the Anvil Flattener move), Power and Glory (Hercules and Paul Roma) and The Orient Express (Sato and Tanaka).
*Col. Mustafa and General Adnan were other figures planned but they were pulled from the toy line due to controversy of the recent Gulf War.
*In the Purple Card Series, a Brutus Beefcake figure was supposed to be included in his Red and Yellow Mega Maniacs outfit. He was replaced with Tatanka because Brutus had long left the WWF before the Purple Card Series was released.
*The original mold for the Yellow Card Shawn Michaels figure was to have his right arm straight with a spring action. That design was replaced with the current version.
*The final set released was on green card backs. The next set to be released would have been on orange card backs and was to include Jeff Jarrett, Diesel, Mo (from Men on a Mission), Mabel (from Men on a Mission), Lex Luger (in USA Gear), Owen Hart (King of Harts attire), and Bastion Booger. This series was never released because the contract fell through the WWF franchise.
*There have been sightings on ebay of a Jake Roberts figure MOC with a yellow snake, similar to the one he carried to the ring during his final WWF run in 1996-1997, named Revelations. The action figure, on a Spanish writing card, has been for sale on ebay for $550 US. However, the validity of the snake being yellow on purpose seems skeptical, being that the line was discontinued 2 years before Roberts introduced the snake on TV.
*There was also a second Dusty Rhodes released with yellow boots, tanner skin tone and brighter white hair. This figure has been seen on eBay over the years but never seen MOC making its true existence in question. Many Hasbro sites, however, list this figure as part of the collection and if it is in fact a true Hasbro release, the rarity of the figure is unknown.
*Another Hasbro issue that is often discussed is the difference between the Mail Away Bret Hart and the "Purple Hearted" Bret Hart that was released MOC. Most collectorswho say that these figures look exactly the same, while some who own a Bret Hart Mail Away Mint in Bag will say there is slight difference. Either way, there is no significant difference between the two figures if they are loose. In fact, for a "Purple Hearted" Bret Hart to be considered the true Mail Away figure, it would have to be Mint in Bag to validate this.
*There has been sighting of two different versions of Bret Hart #2. One with Pink hearts running down his right leg, the other with Purple Hearts. Collectors say the differences is easy to tell in person, but very difficult to tell by a photo that would be in ebay for example. Buy carefully.
