Elections in Zambia

Zambia elects on national level a head of state - the president - and a legislature. The president is elected for a five year term by the people. The National Assembly has 158 members, 150 members elected for a five year term in single seat-constituencies, 8 appointed members and the Speaker. Zambia is a one party dominant state with the Movement for Multiparty Democracy in power. Opposition parties are allowed, but are widely considered to have no real chance of gaining power.

The The Movement for Multiparty Democracy secured 72 seats, the Patriotic Front won 46 seats, and the United Democratic Alliance picked up 27 seats.
