- River Gwaun
The River Gwaun (Welsh: "Afon Gwaun", "Gwaun" meaning 'marsh, moor') is a
river inPembrokeshire ,West Wales , which flows principally westwards draining to the sea intoFishguard Bay atFishguard .The Gwaun rises in the
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park on the northern slopes of "Foel Eryr" coord|51.9580|N|4.8043|W in thePreseli Hills , to the east ofPontfaen .It was formed as a
meltwater channel for the retreatingglacier s at the end of theIce Age . The Gwaun is a slowlymeander ing stream passing throughmarsh y, wetwoodland withalder trees, water meadows andflood plain s. Itsriver valley is deep and secluded up to where it meets the sea at Lower Fishguard coord|51.9959|N|4.9696|W.It has a total length of 15 km and is navigable with canoes for the lower third of its length, beginning west of Pontfaen. Before Pontfaen, the river is joined by the Afon Cwmau which flows from the south.
