- My Revenge
My Revenge formed in
Burlington, Vermont during the Spring of 2001. Following the dissolution of his former hardcore band, In Reach, vocalist Spencer Crispe spent a large part of the spring of 2001 writing songs for what would become My Revenge. Spencer's motivation was to write fast, angry, politically conscious hardcore in the vein of long time musical influencesMinor Threat and7 Seconds . He also was intent on singing about the virtues and joys ofskateboarding in an effort to bring the ideologies ofskateboarding andpunk rock closer together again. My Revenge's first show was July 6th 2001 featuring Bobby Hackney of Spencer's previous band In reach on drums, Patrick Brownson on guitar and
River City Rebels roadie Gavin Compton on bass guitar. It was this line up that gained My Revenge a reputation for having the most bizarre and over-the-top live show that would go on to define the band. The band survived a number of lineup changes including the addition of a second guitar player. My revenge recorded a demo with the original line up which would later be released solely on vinyl joined by a second set of recordings with the additional guitar entitled "Both Feet Over the Line." They later settled with what would be the definitive lineup. Mike Halvorsen joined as bass player in May 2002 followed by Eric Smith joining on guitar soon thereafter. Ryan Krushenick took over drum duties in the spring of 2003, along with Phil England carrying the torch as road warrior for the band. This core arrangement solidified the lineup that has lasted to the present day.
They recorded their first full length album "Less Plot, More Blood" in 2004 for Thorp Records. The concept of Less Plot, More Blood was a B-movie analogy meaning "less talk, more seizing the day." It was meant as a call to stop talking and start living and to make the most out of ones life. Other lyrics found on the album dealt with alienation, government corruption, gay rights, freedom of speech, condemning sexual abuse, individuality, and taking a stand against any form of bigotry or human rights violation. And of course,
skateboarding - a topic continuously celebrated and threaded throughout My Revenge's career. The group embarked on a U.S. tour in 2004, and followed that up with a highly successful UK tour that Fall. They subsequently toured Japan in 2005, making My Revenge the first underground band from Vermont to tour overseas - twice.
In 2006 the band recorded and released their "
Gay Marriage Is Better Than Your Marriage" EP. They followed that up with their second full length album "Six Feet Of Earth Makes All Of Us Equal," another outspoken political record that decried various human rights violations and tackled a multitude of topics including the unhealthy diets abounding in America and lyrics promoting a drug-free lifestyle. Following the release of Six Feet Of Earth Makes All Of Us Equal the band set out on their 5th U.S. tour and toured in Mexico as well.2007 saw the band slowing down a bit from their busy playing schedule. Bassist Mike Halvorsen had become a father which necessitated more time with his family. The band still performed regionally however, and in mid-2007 My Revenge began work on a new record entitled "Strength Through Nonviolence."
