"Guilt Show" is the fourth and final studio album by The Get Up Kids. It was released on Vagrant Records on March 3, 2004.

Recording

The album was the first album to be recorded in Black Lodge Studios, the recording studio in Eudora, Kansas renovated and owned by The Get Up Kids and producer Ed Rose. The album was far less collaborative than their previous works, many songs being written and demoed by lead singer Matt Pryor, then fleshed out by the rest of the band. [AP Magazine Issue #204 "Say Goodnight, Mean Goodbye: The Oral History of 'The Get Up Kids'" Trevor Kelley] During much of the initial pre-production, guitarist Jim Suptic was on his honeymoon, and pianist James Dewees was far less involved in the initial writing process. However, this gave brothers Rob and Ryan Pope a more substantial role in writing the album than they had previously had. In an interview with AP Magazine, Pryor stated that " [Rob's Divorce] was pretty heavy shit to have gone through. So yeah, it made for good lyrical fodder." It has been confirmed that the song "Never Be Alone" was written by Pope about his divorce. [Confirmed at the band's final performance at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City on July 2, 2005]

Promotion

While the song "Sympathy" received some significant radio play, the only single the band released in the United States was "The One You Want". They also released Wouldn't Believe It as a Japan-Only single.

After the album's release, the band went on an extensive world tour to promote the album, including dates in England and Japan as well as a supporting spot on the 2004 leg of the Honda Civic Tour. During the tour, tensions between members of the band were rather high. Lead singer Matt Pryor's wife had recently given birth to their first child, so he wanted to spend more time at home. At one tour date in England, the tensions came to a head when Ryan Pope confronted Pryor due to his recent despondence, and after a band meeting the group broke up. However, they decided to finish their tour schedule. After the tour ended, they didn't play together as a band until the next January during a show at the Granada Theater in Lawrence, Kansas. The band announced their breakup in March 2005, and performed one final tour culminating in a farewell show at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City, Missouri making Guilt Show the band's final studio album.

The album sold rather well, reaching #58 on the Billboard 200 chart [http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/esearch/chart_display.jsp?cfi=305&cfgn=Albums&cfn=The+Billboard+200&ci=3053132&cdi=8126536&cid=03%2F20%2F2004] , and #3 on the Billboard Top Independent Album Chart.
