John Cornish

John Cornish (born 1929) is a British teacher of aikido.

John Cornish studied judo from 1952 at the Budokwai under Trevor Leggett. Arrived in Japan early 1958 and studied at the hombu dojo for aikido and at the Kodokan for judo as a soto deshi until late 1964. He attended early morning aikido practice under Kisaburo Osawa (9th dan) when he was used as uke, and afternoon practices with Koichi Tohei, Kisshomaru Ueshiba and Morihei Ueshiba (the founder of Aikido). He was a member of the Kenshusei class at the Kodokan and had the privilege of opening the All Japan Games and giving a demonstration of judo kata to the Emperor with his partner Donn Draeger. He is one of the few qualified westerners to hold a teaching and examination licence for the Kodokan judo katas. He has published a book on Kodokan Goshin Jutsu having been taught by Kenji Tomiki directly. Currently teaches traditional aikido at the Budowkai in London.
