Hugh Connolly (priest)

The Right Reverend Hugh Gerard Monsignor Connolly S.T.D. is the current President of St Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland.

Early life

Born in September 1961, Connolly, B.A. (Hons), S.T.D. (Summa cum laude) is a native of Burren near Warrenpoint, Co Down where his sister, Rosemary, runs a well known solicitor’s practice. He is a priest of the Diocese of Dromore.

Career

Connolly achieved a B.A. at St Patrick's College, Maynooth and then studied Theology and was ordained from Maynooth in June 1987.

He successfully completed Licentiate and Doctoral Studies in Moral Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome in 1991.

Connolly has authored a book, published in 1995, on the Irish Penitentials and in 2002 published the volume Sin in the New Century Theology series.

He was the Registrar (2001-2006) and Vice-President (1999-2007) of St Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland.

He was Executive Secretary of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference from 1991 to 1997.

He taught courses in Faith and Human Rights, Christian Marriage and Human Sexuality, Sin andRepentance, Virtue Ethics and Discipleship and Pastoral Ethics.

On 10 August 2007, the Trustees of St Patrick's College, Maynooth, announced the appointment of Connolly as President of the College.

He took up office on 1 September, 2007. Connolly replaced Monsignor Dermot Farrell who, after completing two terms as President, has been appointed as the new parish priest of Dunboyne, County Meath.
