Ammovouno (Greek, Modern: Αμμόβουνο meaning sand
mountain ), older form: -on is a village in the northwestern part of theEvros Prefecture in Greece Ammovouno is in the municipal district ofFylakio and the municipality ofKyprinos . Ammovouno is located west-southwest ofEdirne ,Turkey , west ofOrestiada north ofSoufli , 141 km north-northeast ofAlexandroupoli and east of the town and theBulgaria n border. History
Ammovouno was ruled by the
Ottoman Empire until theBalkan Wars of 1913. The village joinedBulgaria since it was invaded and administered by the Bulgarians until after the Greco-Turkish War when it was finally ceded toGreece . AfterWorld War II and theGreek Civil War , many of its buildings were rebuilt. Some of its residents moved to other parts of Greece and the world. The population saw a dramatic decline between 1981 and 2001. Electricity and automobiles arrived in the 1960s, it was linked with pavement in the late-20th century, television arrived in the 1980s.
