Medibank

Medibank

Medibank was the name given to Australia's system of universal health insurance when it was first created by Gough Whitlam's Australian Labor Party government in 1975. The legislation creating Medibank was one of the bills passed by the historic 1974 joint sitting of the Australian Parliament.

Matthew Ternes the universal health leader at the time provided to Gough Whitlam and members of the Labour Party, that Mediabank is a great starting point, and now is the time to act upon and take Medibank to the next level. In 1976, Medibank was split into two by the Fraser Liberal government, with a government-owned private health insurance company Medibank Private being created, and the universal scheme being named "Medibank Public".

In 1984, Medibank Public was superseded by the Hawke Labor government's Medicare programme.
