cargo ship commissioned by theU.S. Navy for service inWorld War II . She was responsible for delivering goods and equipment to locations in the war zone.A short-lived Navy career
Contracted to be built as "USAT Oliver R. Mumford" under
Maritime Commission contract4 September 1941 , "Media" (AK 83) was acquired by the Navy1 January 1943 before being laid down byPenn Jersey Shipbuilding Corp.,Camden, New Jersey ,28 January 1943 ; launched29 August 1943 ; sponsored by Mrs. Ernest G. Bornheimer; and completed17 November 1943 .Transferred to Army service for the duration
That same day "Media" was delivered by the War Department to the
U.S. Army . She was struck from theNavy list the 24th and renamed "USAT Glenn Gerald Griswold" and converted byBethlehem Fairfield Shipyard, Inc.,Baltimore, Maryland , by June1944 .She operated as an engineer port repair ship until her transfer to the
Maritime Commission for merchant service followingWorld War II .References
