Gerson Monteiro

Gerson Monteiro

Walter Gerson da Rocha Monteiro (born 12 July 1973 in Benguela, Angola) is an Angolan professional basketball player formerly with Primeiro de Agosto and a longtime member of the Angola national basketball team. He is also a Portuguese citizen. He is a currently playing for Lusitania in the Azores.

Career

From 1993 to 2003, Monteiro played on various clubs in Portugal, including Ovarense, Oliveirense, and Barreirense. In 2004, Monteiro attempted to join the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA, but was cut during pre-season camp. Afterwards, Monteiro returned to his native Angola, playing for Petro Atletico de Luanda before moving to Primeiro de Agosto.

International experience

Monteiro has been a member of the Angola national basketball team since 2001 and traveled with the squad to world championships in the United States in 2002 and Japan in 2006 as well to the 2004 Olympic games in Greece, where he had the 2nd highest individual 3pt shooting percentage among all players. He also was a member of the FIBA Africa Champion Angola squad in Algeria at the 2007 All-Africa Games.
