J. William Ditter Jr.

John William Ditter, Jr. is a judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Born in 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Judge Ditter graduated from Ursinus College in 1943. From 1943 to 1946, and again from 1951 to 1953, Judge Ditter served a Captain in the United States Navy Reserves. He received his LL.B. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1948. Judge Ditter clerked on the Court of Common Pleas for Montgomery County, Pennsylvania from 1948 to 1950. In 1951 he worked as an assistant district attorney in Montgomery County, a position he would return to from 1953 to 1955. In 1956 he was promoted to first assistant district attorney. From 1953 to 1963 he also worked in private practice in Ambler, Pennsylvania. In 1964 he became a judge on the Court of Common Pleas for Montgomery County, a position he held until 1970, when President Richard Nixon appointed him to the Eastern District. Judge Ditter took senior status in 1986.
