São José (Portuguese for
Saint Joseph ) is a parish in the district ofPonta Delgada in theAzores . The population in2001 is 8,627, its density is 2,217/km² and the area is 3.89 km². It is the largest parish in Ponta Delgada in population and density and is part of the downtown area of Ponta Delgada. InJuly 2002 , the parish of Santa Clara separated from São José. Much of the area is urbanized. The mountains lie to the northwest while the rest of the land are flatlands.Nearest parishes
