Standard de Liège , he played for CS Visé. At the age of 15 he could have made the transfer to eitherReal Madrid orArsenal FC , but he refused.On
September 17 ,2006 a 17-years old Witsel made his debut in a competition game againstFC Brussels when he replacedSteven Defour in the 89th minute. Eleven days later he made his European debut as a substitute againstCelta de Vigo .During the season of 2007-2008, at 18 years of age, he was a key member in the team that won the Belgian League title.
