- Basketball Marathon
Basketball Marathon is a non-profit 501(c)3 which hosts an annual Basketball Marathon to benefit children with life-threatening illnesses. The Duke-Carolina Student Basketball Marathon is a year-long fundraising event jointly organized by students from
Duke University and TheUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . Throughout the year, students from both institutions compete against each other to raise the most money. All proceeds from the marathon benefit the All Star Fund which supports the marathon's mission to, "empower, inspire, and make a positive difference in the lives of children with life-threatening illnesses by creating opportunities to build successful life skills through athletics." The largest beneficiary has been Hoop Dreams Basketball Academy.Each year, the marathon culminates with a Duke vs. Carolina co-ed basketball game. The inaugural Basketball Marathon in 2006 broke the Guinness World Record for longest continuous basketball game at 57 hours and 25 minutes. Duke's team won that game 3699-3444. The Marathon was able to raise over $60,000 to benefit children with life-threatening illnesses.
In 2007, the second annual Duke-Carolina Student Basketball Marathon lasted 36 hours and was hosted in historic Carmichael Gym. The game began Friday, March 30th, 9:00pm and ended Sunday, April 1st at 9:00am. Carolina won the second of the two historic games.
