Just a week before Rebus’s retirement, Rebus and Clarke are investigating a murder at King’s Stables Road. They find the body of a famous Russian poet who has been mugged and beaten to death. It seems that the murder was a random attack but a second murder takes place days after. This time it was a recording artist with close ties to the dead Russian poet. Rebus looks for the connections between these two murders so that he may find the killer. But halfway-through the investigation, Rebus is suspended for the way he interrogated suspects and getting on the wrong side of Scottish bankers and politicians. His last three days before retirement are at home; away from the police station and away from the murder investigation. Rebus continues to solve the murder unhindered by the suspension with the support of his partner Siobhan.
