current =The Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol Serie B (known as Copa Pílsener Serie B due to sponsorship reasons), is the second most important football competition in Ecuador. It has been held yearly since its creation in 1971 (except 1973 & 1983-1988), sometimes holding two tournaments a year. The top team at the end of the tournament are not called champions, but rather winner. It is the only tournament in which Serie B clubs take part.
Format
While the format changes slightly every year, the teams usually play in two double round-robin stages (etapas), with a Liguilla Final at the end of the season to crown the winners.
Promotion & Relegation
The top teams at the end of the Liguilla Final are promoted to Serie A, while the bottom teams of Serie A are relegate to Serie B. The team(s) who finish last in Serie B are relegated to Segunda Categoría, while the winners of the Segunda Categoría are promoted to Serie B.
