Cary is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,531 at the 2000 census. A 2003 special census put the village's population at 17,827. As of 2007 it has grown significantlybecause of the mass of new houses, due to avaricious developers and individuals seeking a "small town atmosphere" in the midst of urban sprawl.Fact|date=April 2008 The schools are now starting to deal with an overcrowding problem.Fact|date=April 2008

Geography

Cary is located at coor dms|42|12|45|N|88|14|49|W|city (42.212432, -88.246830)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.8 km²), of which, 5.2 square miles (13.6 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (1.13%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 15,531 people, 4,962 households, and 4,108 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,956.3 people per square mile (1,142.2/km²). There were 5,037 housing units at an average density of 958.8/sq mi (370.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 95.53% White, 0.39% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.35% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.84% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races/ethnicities. Hispanic or Latino/Latina of any race were 5.43% of the population.

There were 4,962 households out of which 52.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.9% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.2% were non-families. 14.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.12 and the average family size was 3.48.

In the village the population was spread out with 34.8% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $76,801, and the median income for a family was $82,568. Males had a median income of $58,077 versus $32,851 for females. The per capita income for the village was $26,903. About 0.8% of families and 1.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.6% of those under age 18 and 3.4% of those age 65 or over.

Schools

As of 2006, there are four public elementary schools: Briargate, Maplewood, Three Oaks, and Deerpath (Grades K-4); two private elementary schools, one middle school: Prairie Hill (Grades 5-6), and one junior high school: Cary Junior High School (Grades 7-8). There is also a high school, Cary-Grove High School, which shares its student body with Fox River Grove. Some students in Cary also attend schools in the elementary school district of Crystal Lake (DST. 47) and Community Unit School District 300, a large district based out of Carpentersville. The high school districts are 155 and Community Unit School District 300.

Founding

William Cary founded the town of Cary(named after Cary Greenwood, the "train hero" and the great grandfather of Al Boher; who the high school football field is named after) in the year 1841 when he purchased 82 acres for $1.25 an acre. Three years later in 1844 he bought another 80 acres. The total number of acres in Cary came to 640 when his purchases were totaled.Fact|date=March 2007
