Biography

Vasant Sarwate, वसंत सरवटे, born in Kolhapur on February 3 1927, is a cartoonist from India who has primarily contributed to Marathi publications.

He has published number of books on his art and collection of his work.

Some of his best work has been in collaboration with satirist Jaywant Dalvi when Dalvi wrote a monthly column called "Thanthanpal" for Marathi magazine "Lalit".

Apart from cartoons, Sarwate is also known for his illustrations. For number of years now (until 2007), he has created covers of Diwali issues of Marathi magazine, Lalit.

Like all contemporary cartoonists, he has been influenced by The New Yorker and more specifically by the art of Saul Steinberg

Apart from being a creative artist, Sarwate has helped number of younger artists to establish themselves in the world of Marathi cartoons.

He is a qualified civil engineer by education and worked at Associated Cement Companies for most of his working life.

He lives in Vile Parle Mumbai.
