Pearl Shay was a supporting character on the situation comedy, "227", she was portrayed by Helen Martin, who guest spot in many popular shows such as: "That's My Mama", "Good Times", including "Maude", "The Jeffersons", "Full House", and "What's Happening!!" and a lot of other shows from the mid 1970s until the 1990s.

Character Background

Pearl Shay is a nice, old lady living in an apartment building numbered "227", she also has a grandson named Calvin Dobbs, who she took care of, and made him live with her (with no explanation given for his staying with Pearl), Pearl is also best friends with, Mary Jenkins, Rose Lee Holloway and sexy vamp Sandra Clark. In a lot of episodes, Pearl is shown as a sidekick to both Sandra and Mary.

In one episode, when her best friend, Rose was going to spend a weekend in New York City with a man named Raymond Lindley, she can't decide whether or not to go to New York or stay in Washington, D.C., she finally decides to go to New York City after all, and in another episode, when she meets a man in a sports' bar, Pearl decides to get married, and her best friend, Mary, decides to stop it, but when Pearl finds out that her new fiance, is dead, Mary and Pearl both make up and apologize together.

Pearl is rather very the voice of reason, and always had a lot of say especially, if it was worth saying what she felt about it, but sometimes Pearl was very nosy in other people's business, but Pearl learned to sometimes stay of it, and snoop on some other people.
