Defending singles champion is Justine Henin of Belgium. Defending doubles champions are Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Liezel Huber of the United States.

However due to the retirement of former World Number One and defending champion Justine Henin there will now be a new champion this year.

The top eight players and the top four doubles teams in the 2008 WTA Tour will qualify for the Championships.
