Fabrizio Cassol (born
June 8 ,1964 ) is aBelgian saxophonist and the first user of theaulochrome (a double soprano saxophone).He was born in
Ougrée , Belgium. Between 1982 and 1985, he studied at the Liège conservatory and obtained a first prize for saxophone while majoring inchamber music . He graduated inimprovisation and composition. From 1984, he pursued his learning with François Daneels, John Ruocco, Dennis Luxion,Steve Coleman ,Evan Parker andJoe Lovano . At the same time, Cassol began to tour with his first band (Trio Bravo , withMichel Massot andMichel Debrulle ). In 1991, he travelled to theCentral Africa n forest with colleaguesStéphane Galland andMichel Hatzigeorgiou to encounter the Akapygmies . On their return, the trio formedAka Moon , which remains Cassol's main project. Besides, he has performed with musicians likeFrederic Rzewski ,Garrett List ,William Sheller ,Jacques Pelzer ,Toots Thielemans ,David Linx ,Henri Pousseur ,Kris Defoort andDJ Grazzhoppa .He has composed music for dance theatre. The first time in 1992 for
Catherine Lazar andBrigitte Kaquet , then for Brigitte Kaquet in 1994 and finally in 2001 forAnne Teresa De Keersmaeker 's In Real Time. In 1995 he composed withKris Defoort the albumVariations On A Love Supreme . He won the BelgianGolden Django in 1998 as bestFrench-speaking artist. SinceSeptember 10 ,2001 , he's using theaulochrome , a new instrument created byFrançois Louis . He presented the instrument to the public inParis in October 2002. He currently resides inBrussels and teaches at theEtterbeek music academy.Bands
