Southam began his career with Fulham, later moving to Tottenham Hotspur, but didn't feature in either side's first team. He moved on to Enfield and then to Bishop's Stortford in the 2000 close season. He was awarded the Bishop's Stortford Supporters Club Player Of The Year award in 2001, but then suffered a serious injury and was loaned to Boreham Wood to aid his recovery.

He moved to Dagenham & Redbridge in May 2004 [ [http://www.nonleaguedaily.com/news/index.php?newsmode=FULL&nid=17354 Still makes his move] ] and was part of their side that won promotion to the Football League in 2007. He made his league debut on August 11, 2007 in Dagenham's first ever Football League game, a 1-0 defeat away to Stockport County. However on 25th June 2008 Southam was placed on the transfer list on his own request, citing reasons that he wanted to further his career at a higher level.
