East Surrey Family History Society

The East Surrey Family History Society is a genealogical association in Surrey, England. It was founded in 1977 and covers parishes in the Eastern part of the ancient County of Surrey. This includes several modern day London Boroughs - Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, Lambeth, Merton, Richmond, Southwark, Sutton and Wandsworth.

It is a registered charity [cite web | author= | title=Extract from the Central Register of Charities for EAST SURREY FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY | url=http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk/registeredcharities/showcharity.asp?remchar=&chyno=286659 | publisher=Charity Commission for England and Wales | accessdate=2008-03-08] and an active member of the Federation of Family History Societies [cite web | author= | title=FFHS - Member Societies in England : Surrey - Worcestershire | url=http://www.ffhs.org.uk/members2/england/eng-surry.php | publisher=Federation of Family History Societies | accessdate=2008-03-08] .

The Society aims to promote and encourage the public study of family history, genealogy, and local history with particular reference to Surrey. It also works to preserve, transcribe and publish historical records throughout East Surrey. This includes improving the security and accessibility of archival material. Notably the Local Studies Centre in Sutton Library has received, and continues to receive, practical help and computing resources for work it could not otherwise afford. Similarly the Surrey History Centre in Woking, which is run by the Surrey County Council, receives assistance for essential conservation projects. (more to come)

In 2007 the Society took part in the first ever Who Do You Think You Are? Live staged at Olympia, London. This three day event, which proved to be enormously successful, took its theme from the very popular BBC television documentary series of the same name. With over 2000 members world-wide the Society has several local groups meeting in communities throughout East Surrey, and it publishes a quarterly family history journal. It also has a multi-award winning website.
