Three Fires Council

Three Fires Council formed from the merger of Two Rivers Council and DuPage Area Council (named for Dupage County); it was briefly called "Two Rivers-DuPage Area Council" in the interim. Its council service center is located in St. Charles, Illinois and also operates a Scout Shop in West Chicago, Illinois. Three Fires operates Camp Big Timber near Elgin, Illinois and Camp Freeland Leslie near Oxford, Wisconsin. Camp Freeland Leslie

Camp Freeland Leslie (CFL), located in Oxford, Wisconsin, is a Boy Scout camp owned by Three Fires Council of the Boy Scouts of America. It began in 1972, and is located on Lake Emrick. Camp Freeland Leslie is a patrol cooking camp and does not operate a dining hall, save for group feeding opportunities during Webelos Resident Camp.

As with most scout camps, CFL offers opportunities for scouts to operate as patrols, among them through the patrol cooking approach employed by the camp. With a patrol method camp, the scouts must work together in patrols as a team. There are many activities at Camp Freeland Leslie where scouts must work together in patrols to accomplish a task, such as cooking a meal, or playing a game.

Along with six weeks of Boy Scouts each summer, there is also a week for Cub Scouts. The Cub Week has a different theme each year, and the Cub Scouts can earn many different activity pins while at camp.

Program Areas

There are six program areas where merit badges are taught in CFL: Waterfront, Ecology-Conservation, Scoutcraft, Eagle's Nest, New Frontiers, and Shooting Sports.

The Waterfront teaches the Swimming, Canoeing, Lifesaving, Rowing, and Small-Boat Sailing merit badges. They also run the Mile Swim B.S.A., Snorkeling B.S.A., Instructional Swim, Polar Bear Swim, and B.S.A. Lifeguard.

The Nature area teaches the Astronomy, Bird Study, Environmental Science, Fish and Wildlife Management, Fishing, Forestry, Geology, Insect Study, Mammal Study, Nature, Reptile and Amphibian Study, Soil and Water Conservation, and Weather merit badges.

The Scoutcraft area teaches basic Scouting skills and fundamentals in the Backpacking, Hiking, Camping, Cooking, Orienteering, Pioneering, and Wilderness Survival merit badges.

The Eagle's Nest area is based around helping Scouts obtain the rank of Eagle. Eagle's Nest offers the Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Communications, Emergency Preparedness, First Aid, and Personal Fitness merit badges. Eagle's Nest also offers the First Class Trail program, which is based around helping Scouts get to the rank of First Class.

The New Frontiers area offers a variety of different types of merit badges, such as the Art, Aviation, Basketry, Cinematography, Indian Lore, Leather work, Photography, Radio, Sculpture, Space Exploration, and Wood Carving merit badges.

The Shooting Sports area offers the Rifle Shooting, Shotgun Shooting, Archery, and Fingerprinting merit badges.

Although they are not actual program areas, the Administration and Maintenance staff also teach merit badges. The Maintenance staff teaches the Painting merit badge, while the Administration teaches the American Heritage and Medicine merit badges.

Order of the Arrow

Lowaneu Allanque Lodge 41 is the Order of the Arrow Lodge affiliated with Three Fires Council. The Spring Fellowship is held at CFL, as well as Ordeal and Brotherhood ceremonies during summer camp. A large portion of the Order of the Arrow activity in Three Fires Council takes place at Camp Freeland Leslie.
