The Vijayabahu Regiment was first formed raised in Vavuniya on 1 December 1980 under the command of Lt Col. T.R.T. Jayatunga SLSR. However it was amalgamated with the
Rajarata Rifles to form newGajaba Regiment in October 1983. The 1st Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment was resurrected on the 15 November 1988 at Malay Street,Colombo with Lt. Col. J. Nammuni SLSR as its first Commanding Officer.Units
