Caralho

Caralho

Caralho is a popular Portuguese word, part of the vocabulary inherited from Latin, and so present in the early written records of the medieval Galician-Portuguese language. Before the introduction of "pénis" (from lat. "penis") and "falo" (from gr. "phallós") by the learned registers of the language in the nineteenth century, caralho was the only common name for the male sexual member, and it is so until now in all the popular and colloquial registers.
It is only metaphorically or figuratively that one can call any "phallic" thing caralho (e.g. poles, masts, pillories, memorial stones, milestones...). Besides, caralho is part of a lot of expressions, both colloquial or slang, with many different meanings.

From Latin "*caraculu-", «little stick».
