- USS White Plains (AFS-4)
USS "White Plains" (AFS-4) was the fourth Sclass|Mars|combat stores ship of the
United States Navy . USS "White Plains" was named after theBattle of White Plains during theAmerican Revolutionary War .She was laid down on 2 October 1965 by the
National Steel and Shipbuilding Company inSan Diego, California ; launched on 26 July 1966; sponsored by Mrs. Bob Wilson; and commissioned at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard on 23 November 1968, Captain Thomas B. Brenner in command.Notes and references
White Plains was used as the trial vessel for the class to mount the two Vulcan
Phalanx CIWS . The ship retained the Phalanx systems after decision was made not to mount them on the rest of the class.- January 1991, the White Plains was relieved from its deployment in Perisan Gulf by sister ship USS|Niagara Falls|AFS-3|2.
- Early August, 1992: The ship was receiving extensive refit, including her main steam plant.
- Late August, 1992: The ship unable to be leave on its own power, had its mooring lines reinforced with anchor chain to keep the ship moorned to the pier as Typhoon Omar approached the island.
- 27th August, 1992: White Plains is torn from litterely from its moorings. The ship with its skeleton crew, rode out the ships violient movement of Omar's 150 Mph winds runs around Apra Harbor. The ship ultimately ran around on the coral beach. The extent of the damage, lead to the ship's decommissioning in 1995.
