Jacksonville State University . The station was established for the purpose of giving students an environment in which they could learn to be radio broadcasters.WLJS-FM was first chartered on
September 29 ,1975 , and currently operates under the branding "92-J". Broadcasting at 6,000 watts, the station is an auxiliaryNational Public Radio member station which provides the university and surrounding communities with news and music programming, and is the flagship station for all JSU major sporting events. In that capacity, the station broadcasts JSU football, baseball, softball, men's and women's basketball.During the morning and mid-day weekdays, the station is mostly dedicated to programming from NPR and
American Public Media , including "Morning Edition ", "Day to Day ", "All Things Considered " and "Performance Today ". Weekend public radio offerings include "Car Talk ", "Sunday Baroque " and "Weekend Edition Sunday ".Formatting changes to college/alternative rock for the flagship music program 92J Rocks and into the night. Regular, or "playlist" DJs are typically new to the air and have little choice in what music they play, usually playing a rotation format. Night shifts are generally given to "specialty" DJs who have more liberty in making their music selections. Often, the nighttime shows will carry a specific theme or genre of music played.

WLJS is located in Self Hall, home to JSU's Department of Communication. Previous employees warn newcomers to stay away from a large, drawling man from Jackson County. If he corners you, toss a cheeseburger in his general direction and run like hell.
