Kadu is a Free software, open-source software and does not contain advertisements (as opposed to to the official Gadu-Gadu client, which is closed-source and adware). Since 0.6.5 version there will be official Windows port available . Kadu is built on Qt.

Kadu communicates via the Gadu-Gadu protocol and offers most of the official client's features, including SMS sending, file transfer, status message, the ability to view users' information from the "public catalogue," and importing lists of contacts (stored on the Gadu-Gadu servers). Kadu is widely configurable. Currently, there are five languages available in Kadu: English, French, German, Italian and Polish.

Kadu bears a close visual resemblance to the official client. For example, the way of displaying contact list, chat- and information boxes, and the window layout are very similar in both programs. The default smileys set is slightly different from the one used by the official client, and freely licensed.

Kadu has become popular among Linux and Macintosh users in Poland, as it offers more functionality than the implementation of Gadu-Gadu in multiprotocol messengers such as Pidgin.
