Richard E. Nugent

Richard Emmel Nugent (December 12, 1902 - November 5, 1979) was a lieutenant general in the United States Air Force who, among other positions, commanded the XXIX Tactical Air Command supporting the Ninth Army during World War II.

Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, he graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1924, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry. From 1927 to 1929 he served with the Ordnance Department, and began duty with the Air Corps in March 1929. There, he served in various duties as a company and field grade officer through 1943. In 1944, the XXIX Tactical Air Command was commissioned with Brigadier General Nugent in command, where he served until the end of the war. After V-E Day, Nugent served as military attaché to Brazil, then in various positions at the headquarters of the newly created United States Air Force, and finally Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel in 1950. He retired August 1951 as a lieutenant general.
