Lahore Race Club

Lahore Race Club

Lahore Race Club named after the city it is based in, Lahore, was established in 1924 though some veterans claim that the club started in 1874, but the record goes back to 1924. The club was initially situated at Jail Road (the current site of Jilani Park). In 1976, the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto government asked the club, which was registered as a company, to shift the horse races away from the Jail Road racecourse. However, it continued to operate there until 1980, when it was forced to leave.

The races were not held for about 15 months. In September 1981, the club started organising races in Kot Lakhpat. Since then, it has progressed and now organises, among other races, the Pakistan Derby on its 2,254-metre long track.

The club hosted Pakistan’s first horse race under floodlights in June 2004. The ruler of Dubai named Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf attended the opening ceremony of the floodlight races.
