Evangel Christian Academy

Evangel Christian Academy

Evangel Christian Academy is a prepartory school in Shreveport, Louisiana with two campus spanning K-12, owned & operated privately in association with Shreveport Community Church (formerly First Assembly of God Church) which is located on the property of the grade school sister campus.

History

Rodney and Frances Duron, parents of the current chancellor, Denny Duron, founded the school in 1980 as a small kindergarten to eighth grade school. Their vision was to establish a school that would offer families of Shreveport an affordable private school, a school that welcomed a diverse student population and a school that stressed excellence in every area. The high school was added as a second campus in 1989. Evangel has grown from 21 graduating seniors in 1990 to over 100 seniors in 2001. The school currently has approximately 600 students.

As of Spring 2005, Evangel Christian Academy is the only school in Caddo Parish, public or private, to have earned SACS accreditation for grades K-12th. Evangel Christian Academy is a state approved (K(5)-12) school through the Louisiana State Department of Education. It offers students of all ages a challenging curriculum, dedicated staff, and education for life.

Football

Evangel became known for its high school football in the 90's. It started with Josh Booty, who brought ECA's first State Championship and was USA Today's National High School Player of the Year. It continued with Abram Booty as he brought ECA 2 more State Championships. Including ECA's first ever 15-0 record. Abram also holds the National High School Records for Career Catches, Touchdowns, and Receiving Yards. It continued with Brock Berlin who went 45-0 as a starter and brought 3 more state championships including their first ever 5-A State Championship over West Monroe to complete the 60-0 Saga. In 2000, it was a rebuilding year for Evangel with Brent Rawls at QB. In 2001, QB Coach Booty was promoted to Head Coach and with the help of his son John David Booty, won the 2001 state championship against West Monroe. In 2002, Coach Dunn returned to the head coaching position. After losing there first game to Longview High, TX. Evangel went on a 14 game win streak including an impressive 35-4 victory in the State Championship game against West Monroe.

Unfortunately that was the peek of Evangel. Just 5 years ago they had the best high school team of all time with John David Booty, Jacob Hester, Key Dawson, Chris Bowers, and more. Now as of today they have become an above average team. Coach Booty was released from Evangel in the Spring of 2003, causing John David Booty to leave for USC his junior year and not have a chance to play his beloved senior year that never was. ECA that year was suppose to be the best of all time. Playing De La Salle from California with a winning streak at that moment of 150+ games on the first ever ESPN National High School Football Televised Game. Instead of ECA doing what they always did, they got blown out instead. They also played Hoover that year in a losing effort. If JD Booty would have been there, JD and company would of gone through an unbelievable victorious season. But it was the season that never was. Evangel lost that year in the State Championship to Hahnville 42-35. In there last year in 5-A, they beat West Monroe 21-20 in the last show down between the 2 rivaled schools in the State Championship of 2004. Evangel was then bumped down to 1-A. During this time, Coach Booty had been hired as AD at Calvary Baptist Academy, a brand new high school down in south Shreveport. Ironically, Calvary and Evangel would end up in the same district. The first year they met in 2005, Evangels left over talent from the old Evangel blew out Calvary's young freshmen and sophomores team including Coach Booty's youngest son #4 QB (soph) Jake Booty 55-3. Since Coach Booty had been released, Evangel had started to change the way they bring in players to play ball. This became known as the "e" and the old Evangel was no more. Evangel would go on to win state that year in 2005. The next year in 2006, Calvary almost pulled off the biggest upset of their time. In only their 2nd year of being a high school, Calvary lost to whats now known as the "e" 20-19. Evangel also won state that year in 2006. Finally, November 2nd, 2007. Both Calvary and Evangel had been bumped up to 2-A and would meet again on this date. QB Jake Booty now a Senior, wore #10 in honor of his brother JD Booty for his Senior Year he never had. Calvary would beat the "e" 28-21. Evangels first district loss since November 2nd, 1990 to Plain Dealing. A record started at Evangel by Josh Booty, ended by Jake Booty. Evangel would go on to lose to John Curtis in the Semi Final game in the playoffs of 07.

Campus

The ECA high school campus lies on approximately a fifteen acre lot in West Shreveport. The elementary campus and Shreveport Community Church occupy an approximate sixty acre lot ten blocks South of the high school campus. The high school campus is home to the "main" high school classrooms (divided into "A" and "B" wings with ten rooms on either side serving various purposes) including a library with over thirty-five Dell Dimension 3000 desktop computers (20 more of which that can be found in the computer lab), a main and student office, and a high school cafeteria with food service provided by the Sodexho food service company. These were original at the opening of the high school campus and were built by previous private schools. Further back in the campus are the "T" (temporary) buildings which were added in 1993 by founder Frances Duron to accommodate the growing number of middle and high school students enrolling in the school. The campus also includes five tennis courts, one softball, baseball, and football field, and a large basketball gym (built in 1997). The campus is surrounded by woods on two sides and by homes on the other two sides. During the summers the campus is used for daycamps for underprivileged children from surrounding areas.
