"Ten Tall Men" is a 1951 adventure film about the French Foreign Legion. It starred Burt Lancaster, Jody Lawrance and Gerald Mohr.

Plot

Sergeant Mike Kincaid learns of an impending attack on a Foreign Legion fort from a Rif prisoner. He volunteers to lead nine Legionnaires, among them Corporal Luis Delgado (Gilbert Roland), to delay the enemy. When he finds out that the Rif leader, Khalid Hussein (Gerald Mohr), is marrying Mahla (Jody Lawrance) in order to cement an alliance with another tribe, Kincaid kidnaps her. Mahla begins to fall in love with her handsome captor, as Hussein pursues the Legionnaires across the desert.

An amusing adventure story, which is probably set between the two wars. The only prop, that helps to date it is the abandoned Legion lorry. The story transposes, American values to French Colonial Africa. The legitimacy of the Legionnaires to be there is never questioned. The wedding ceremony is almost like a registry marriage, transposed to the desert, with the celebrant holding a bible. There is an acknowledgement that women were not treated as equals, with the request that the bride should kneel to the husband.
