Backup and Restore Center is a component included in Windows Vista that allows users to access file backup utilities built into the operating system. It is a replacement of NTBackup, which was included in previous Windows versions.

Features and limitations

The features included and enabled in the Backup and Restore Center are dependent on the edition of Windows Vista used. In Windows Vista Home Premium and Home Basic, users can only backup personal files (e.g. music, video, documents), not system files. However, in Windows Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate, system files can also be backed up. A notable limitation of the Backup and Restore Center is that it does not allow users to specify individual files or folders to be backed up or skipped.

Complete PC Backup

Complete PC Backup is a feature in Business, Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista that allows for the imaging of the entire operating system. The backed up image can later be restored through the Windows Recovery Environment if recovery of the operating system is necessary.

This feature is comparable to third-party software such as Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage.
